Global Entertainment Mag Interview

Sima Fisher: Multi-Woman Extraordinaire

Zack: Model, singer/song writer, dancer, painter, and even actress, is there anything you don't do?

Sima: Yes, I don't do porn. I enjoy doing things which are creative and allow me to express myself, porn isn't one of those things.

Zack: Of all of these roles you play in the entertainment industry, which one do you feel most comfortable in? Why?

Sima: I find I feel most comfortable as a musician and singer because I'm able to write how I want to and express myself through music. I'm comfortable on a film set as well. I find when you work on set, you develop interesting relationships with people, and because you spend so much time on set, they can feel like family at times.

Zack: As you wear so many hats in the entertainment industry, what would you say are your strengths and what would you like to focus and work on?

Sima: I find my strengths are in singing and songwriting and my creativity. What I continue to work on is building momentum for my career and always being focused on taking my career to the next level.

Zack: Do you believe in the "Jack (in this case, Jill) if all trades" scenario when it comes to your career?

Sima: I'd have to say I do. Sometimes though, one thing leads to another and you're at a point where preparation meets opportunity and you've got to be prepared for success no matter how it presents itself. I also believe in being creative in any way possible, that helps.

Zack: You've been singing since you were just a child. What influenced you to develop your singing skills to what they are today?

Sima: I began singing in Kodaly when I was in school and my Stepfather had taught me to play accordian, so I knew rudimentary notes and scales was I was younger. I did a lot of musical theatre in high school, I really enjoyed it and it became another creative outlet along with art, acting, and even sports.

Zack:You've been singing since you were 9 years old. What influenced you to continue singing and songwriting as a career?

Sima: Sarah McLaughlin is a big influence and I've been a big fan of hers for years. She's a Canadian artist and she's a songwriter whom I've always loved. I'm a huge fan of Madonna when it comes to performance. I think I've read everything about Madonna out there. Seriously.

Zack: You write a lot of your songs, correct?

Sima: Yeah, I do write most of my songs. There's only one that was written for me though, and that was by Simon Wilcox. She's very talented and quite well known and she's a songwriter in Toronto. I love her songs, and have for years. It was an hour to sing her song.

Zack: When you're beginning the writing process how do you start? Do you have a set process when beginning to write?

Sima: There's no set process, really. Sometimes the producer will have a beat and I'll put melodies and lyrics over it, or I'll have something worked out and I'll rework it with different producers. Sometimes you write a song one way with one producer and then write the same song a totally different way with a different producer. It's strange how a song can evolve from a collaboration. It's art and artistic minds coming together for the sake of art!

You're a painter as well? When did you begin to notice a flair for the visual arts?

Sima: I started painting when I was younger. I think it was my first days in art class that I realized I loved making art. I always had a flair for the arts and anything creative., I think it's also genetic. My family were always artists, and musicians and I think I was born to be one as well.

Zack: What is the biggest challenge you've had to overcome when writing and recording a music album?

Sima: I find the biggest challenge sometimes is your relationships with other people. Sometimes one person wants it to go one direction and one wants it to go another. you have to compromise and just do what's best for the situation. Sometimes realizing that you're wrong and working out a problem in a relationship can be the biggest challenge of all, and relationships are key to getting anywhere in the entertainment business.

Zack: You recently performed at the Opera House here in Toronto last month, how did you like that?.

Sima: Yeah, that was a great show! To perform at the Opera House was a great experience. I've also performed at the Tattoo Rock Parlor, I did a big show with Najjah a little while ago too.

Zack: What do you think is the most important part about performing live?

Sima: I think the most important part of a live performance is just being well rehearsed. Although now that I think about it, you can never rehearse enough, so I guess it would be improv and professionalism. When something goes wrong, it's important to just go with it and continue the performance. I would rather watch a real artist make a mistake when doing their craft than see somebody not even trying and lip sync to a prerecorded track. That's the beauty of the live performance, it's human, and humans can make mistakes. That's art, it's not perfect it's flawed, just like it's creators.

Zack: How does the experience performing live compare to hat of modeling and acting?

Sima: With modeling and acting especially, you do take after take until it's perfect. When performing live you can prepare before hand, but you only really have one chance to get things right, one take. In theatre acting, you have to be perfect the first time, where in modeling and singing there's the process of editing and mixing which can help improve the product sometimes, but that's done after the fact. Acting demands perfection on the spot, one take, get it right.

Zack: You've studied Health and Fitness at Fanshawe College in London, ON and later opened your own health called "Healthy Balance". What services do you offer? What can people expect when they sign on to the Sima Fisher Fitness Program?

Sima: Healthy Balance offered personal training services, like workout programs aerobics programs and fitness and nutrition tips. Lately though, I've been focusing on my singing and acting and my new website and I'm going to share my fitness and nutrition knowledge there. I think it's important to be healthy and stay at your peak performance. If you have good nutrition and stay in shape you can do just about anything!

Zack: What direction is your career going to explode in next? What's on the horizon for Sima Fisher?

Sima: I'm taking it up a notch and I'm trying to get bigger movie roles and performance gigs. I'm going to build my career to the next level, I've got a new website coming out soon and I'm going to keep building momentum towards success. Along the way I might falter and make mistakes, but I'm going to learn from them and continue moving on and learning and getting better. That's the nature of success.

Zack: For anybody who wants to find out more about you online, where can they go?

Sima: The new www.simafisher.com will be up and running in April this year, which will have a lot more content than before. I'll have personal blogs and everything I've done all across the board; modeling, singing, acting, and I'll have fitness tips and a section for fan art as well! I like all the fan art I receive and I like having an open dialog with people. I can also answer any questions for those looking to get into the entertainment industry and how to do it, what good first steps may be and all that.

Zack: Thanks Sima for taking the time to sit down with me (albeit on the floor of an aerobics studio) and answering my questions. You're fun to talk to, I can't wait to see the new site.

Sima: Cool, thanks for having me Zack. It was fun.
